Across the day, four artists, Blinkerfluid, Stella Tavener, Boxedin and Jason Cavanagh, will be turning blank walls into permanent murals in the Spielhaus courtyard, with bold urban edge next to soft abstraction next to cheeky still life next to theatrical surrealism. It will be an aesthetic feast as audiences will be able to watch these varying styles unfold simultaneously side-by-side.
The courtyard takeover also comes with live music, food from local producers sourced directly from Queen Victoria Market, as well as a healthy amount of organic wine. Also on offer will be free stencil-making and a mural-making workshop. It's an afternoon that aims to be relaxed, hands-on and very much pitched at the people who make Melbourne’s arts scene what it is.In a climate where venues keep disappearing, seeing a new space open feels almost rebellious. As Motley CEO Jason Cavanagh puts it, "to be opening up [a new venue] feels so exciting. The Spielhaus is a fun little spot to enjoy the local art scene, and imbibe some local produce. We’re all about supporting local makers, they’re the absolute lifeblood of Melbourne." Cavanagh is very serious about supporting local artists and will also be operating a third venue during the Melbourne Comedy Festival, Motley Wherehaus. Between these three venues, Motley will be hosting close to 20% of the shows during the festival.
Scale Up is a warm, easy way to ease into summer and welcome a new arts venue into the fold. Bring a friend, bring a kid, bring someone who needs a bit more colour in their week. The Spielhaus looks ready to earn its place along the Motley Bauhaus in the Motley family. See you Saturday.
