Hanging up a piece of art shouldn't be too difficult. But when it involves two silent clowns, a live musician, and teamwork that is fittingly hanging by a thread, it quickly turns into a masterclass in chaos. Created and performed by Rae Colquhoun-Fairweather and Will Bartolo, Masterpiece is a highly entertaining hour of clowning, as these two art installers stretch a simple job into a nonstop parade of hilarious antics and escalating madness.
Colquhoun-Fairweather and Bartolo are an exceptional duo, working seamlessly together. At times, it feels like they are surprising each other with their choices and reactions, despite needing to be tightly scripted to ensure the show runs smoothly. They present their opposing roles brilliantly, without tipping into extreme stereotypes, and maintain the affectingly human, emotional beings that makes them so engaging.
What makes their performance truly captivating is the sheer playfulness they imbue into every moment. The pair bring a joyous spark to the smallest gestures, turning mundane tasks into opportunities for comedy and connection. Their physicality is impeccable. Their movement are carefully choreographed yet feels spontaneous, lending the evening a lively energy that keeps us on our toes. The way they move in sync, reacting to each other and the audience, transforms the stage into a dynamic playground, where basic actions are filled with humour and life.
The inclusion of Gabbi Bolt as the musical accompaniment is a well-judged complement to the clowning. It’s always great to see Bolt play, and the little touches of improvisation she adds are very amusing. Her music helps set the tone and rhythm for the unfolding absurdity taking place.
Various artworks (created by Colquhoun-Fairweather and Bartolo!) hang on the walls throughout the venue, while other pieces sit on plinths, adding another layer to the experience that encourages the room to believe they really are in an art gallery, as we wait to see how these two will accomplish a seemingly straightforward task. The finale delivers a wonderfully satisfying conclusion, followed by an even more delightful, unexpected twist that perfectly sums up the show. It gives the audience what they want, and then gives them more than they realised they wanted. Masterpiece is, quite simply, masterful.
