Non Stop review (Melbourne International Comedy Festival)

Circus Oz returns to the Melbourne Town Hall for the first time in over 20 years, and they’re not holding anything back. Their latest show, Non Stop, lives up to its name from the instant it begins, kicking off with a breathtaking trapeze act that sets the tone for the rest of the production: high-energy and brimming with spirit. There’s no downtime, just sheer talent.

David Trappes absolutely dazzles with a jaw-dropping bowling ball juggling and balancing routine that has the crowd both gasping and cheering. The ensemble scenes are equally thrilling, especially the finale’s flying trapeze, which features a glorious group sequence. But Non Stop isn’t all about acrobatics, it also finds room for some superb clowning. Cleverly choreographed stumbles, perfectly timed trips, and joyful physical chaos prove that circus doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel or flirt with danger to be entertaining. Sometimes, a stumble and a grin are more than enough. And there's plenty here.

Laurel Frank’s costumes are a vibrant feast: bright colours, bold cuts, and theatrical flair that underline the company’s playfulness and its political edge. Beneath the shine, there’s substance. Non Stop isn’t afraid to comment on the challenges of ageing in physically demanding industries like circus. It’s a multi-generational cast, with the legendary Debra Batton, at 65, showing that age is no barrier to brilliance. But eventually, you have to ask: what happens next? How do you support yourself when your body will inevitably let you down? And this isn't only a circus problem, it's a problem for everyone, particularly with the ongoing cost of living crisis and rise of economic uncertainty.

The live band is seamlessly integrated into the performance, effortlessly weaving through the action with a great mix of instruments, including saxophones to flutes. Each act is underscored by its own distinct musical approach and genre that highlights the humour or builds the suspense at precisely the right time.

Non Stop is classic Circus Oz: cheeky, fearless, and deeply human. It delights everyone, young and old, while offering reflections on the world we live in, and how far should we push ourselves to be able to enjoy our life? This is circus with heart, brains, and guts, and it is a truly impressive return for Circus Oz.
