YUMMY DELUXE - Melbourne Fringe Festival review

We can all admit that sometimes life is a drag. For the performers of YUMMY DELUXE, life is a drag all the time and they wouldn’t have it any other way. In this utterly captivating production, director and founder of YUMMY, James Welsby has brought together several incredible artists for an unrestrained evening of live art, cabaret and burlesque.

Jandruze seduces the audience with their over-the-top, deliciously camp performance to Detroit Grand Pubahs’ “Sandwiches”, which comes with the creation of the sexiest sandwich ever. Benjamin Hancock is equal parts unsettling and sexy in a revealing red sequined and feathered outfit in his routine to Marilyn Manson’s “The Beautiful People”. The eclecticism of the music in YUMMY DELUXE supports its intention of being an open invitation to everyone. Wherever you stand in the LGBTQI community - and even if you don’t - we are all welcome and accepted here.

Valerie Hex lives up to her name as she cast some magic on stage along with her impressive dance moves to Prince’s “When Doves Cry”. There are so many acts to mention that include fellow YUMMY artists Zelia Rose, Hannie Helsden and Joni in the Moon, but part of the appeal of this show are the surprises throughout, so less said in this review the better experience for you.

A wonderful kaleidoscope of colour exists within the YUMMY DELUXE world. There may be plenty of flesh on display but there’s also lots of shine and sparkle to the costumes that are made entirely by the performers, with the “Licky Licky Licky Licky” outfits of note. The consistently effective lighting design adds a fierce spirit to each act while being different enough to constantly surprise and engage the audience.

YUMMY DELUXE culminates with a “Femme Fatale Finale” which is glorious in execution, energy and choreography. It’s the perfect way to finish a show that has been flawless from the second it begins. It’s a shame that this party must end, especially as you become enveloped by the happiness and confidence shared with us by the YUMMY team.
