That's The Way The Mop Flaps review (Melbourne International Comedy Festival)

That’s The Way The Mop Flaps is a sketch comedy fever dream soaked in absurdity, musical flair, and a healthy splash of sapphic chaos. Hannah Malarski invites us into her surreal world, where no concept is too bizarre to play with, as long as it gets a laugh. It’s messy, it’s inventive, and while it doesn’t always hang together, it’s got enough charm to mop up its own spills.

Malarski brings an assortment of characters to life, including the wonderful opening of two nuns having a hymn battle-off with the aid of a loop station. They start off as enemies, but where this godly pair end up requires an intervention from the man himself, which has some brilliant voice work by Jack Richardson.

From there, Malarski opens the doors wide open into her warped mind, but in a good way. Lesbian Santana croons a song “Love Is Love” to her girlfriend listing different scenarios in which their love will forever find a way, except of course under one White Lotus-esque circumstance, which threatens to derail their relationship. This, and another live music segment, her “The Lesbian Alphabet” rendition, further highlight her skills beyond comedian.

Not all the acts land as well as the standouts mentioned above, and that may be down to the show's lack of structural glue. A clear through-line would bring a stronger sense of cohesion, because right now it feels like a party bag of tricks: fun, but a bit scattered. To really shine, it needs a central hook or thread to surprise us, or at least wrangle the mayhem into something more memorable.

That’s The Way The Mop Flaps is an entertaining, offbeat ride through Malarski’s imagination, one that’s bursting with clever ideas, musical talent, and moments of comedic spark. It might not be weird enough to blow your pants off, but there’s more than enough to put a smile on your dial.
